How Rockwell Hardness Testing Works

The depth of the indentation left by the indenter is measured, and the Rockwell hardness value is calculated based on the difference between the depth of the indentation and the depth of the initial reference point.

The Rockwell hardness tester uses a dial or digital readout to display the hardness value. The hardness value is determined by the depth of the indentation made by the indenter, and it is expressed as a number on a Rockwell scale.
